[Arcade PC] Quake Arcade Tournament Edition

GitHub now offers Quake Arcade Tournament Edition, which is a version of the original Quake for a limited run of arcade cabinets from back in the day (thanks Sinoc229 via PC Gamer). This must be run under MAME. There's a QUAKE Arcade Tournament Edition Blog with more on the Quake arcade cabinets:

The game was housed in a full sized upright arcade cabinet with a 27" 640x480 VGA display screen and a custom Trackball controller setup with 7 separate action buttons. It ran on a custom PC known as the Quantum3D Quicksilver Arcade PC. While that may sound impressive, this was 1998 and in reality it was only a 266 MHz Pentium II running under Windows 95!! However, with its custom graphics card setup it was pretty high end for the time... especially in an Arcade cabinet. The setup also contained a proprietary I/O card known as the Quantum3D Game Control Interface or GCI.

This game is noted (on KLOV and other lists) as being one of the RAREST Arcade games ever created. Hence, there is a large amount of people that believe this is some kind of hoax and that it NEVER existed, or that it never made it past the prototyping stage.

The rumour also claims that there were only 20 working cabinets ever manufactured. However, this appears to be completely false in that there are countless accounts of this game having been seen and played all over North America over the years. What this rumour does NOT take into account is that the game was actually marketed for the most part as a RETRO CONVERSION KIT for commercial arcade owners who already were in possession of useable cabinets and parts to complete a Quake Arcade Tournament Edition installation.

I had to modify the glquake.bat to run game

set FX_GLIDE_NO_SPLASH=0
set SST_GFXCLK=48
set FX_GLIDE_SWAPINTERVAL=0
glquake_decrypted.exe -nojoy -nogci
exit

as well as modify the quake.rc to

Quake Arcade Tournament Edition Pack:  including Nglide setup / .chd for mame / and Patched .exe

1) You have to create a shortcut of "glquake_decrypted.exe" and add "-nogci" to parameters line

2) Install Nglide Setup (included)

3) Run game

Tested on latest Win 10

I can manage to launch the game but when it starts it crashes on trying primary port at local  just exits without any errors

Are you using a shortcuts with -nogci arg ?

Try to load  a game instead of "New Game"

where do i put the shorcuts -nogci arg ? which file Âż? thanks

Right click on "glquake_decrypted" , click on "create a shortcut"

Right click on the "glquake_decrypted"'s shortcut go to properties then in "target" window add -nogci

you should have : "...Quake Arcade Tournament Edition\glquake_decrypted.exe" -nogci

Or use this bat  (Put it in your Quake ATE folder where .exe are)

Quake Arcade tournament Edition.bat

"New Game" seems to doesnt work. Use "Load Game" instead.

Just tried to load one of the 3 saves and i get to the screen insert 1 credit with the countdown then goes back to the main screen is there any specific key to insert credits as i tried all the keys and mouse and nothing seems to work

Update: i managed to get it to work somehow nut every time i start it over need to setup all the key bindings again and finally i got it after binding all the keys just need to load a save and save it again it was a bit buggy at the beginning  the monsters wouldnt fall over when killed but now after i got through a couple of levels its all fine ?? seems the trick its to setup your key bindings and load/save your own conf ??

ups i was wrong wont save the key bindings at all if u exit :(

Is there a way to start from the beginning, without using "new game"?

I mean E1M1.

Posté(e)

Ok seems the fix the start new game crash its a windows issue it will not start if the root dir its too long so if you get the game under c: or on desktop should work fine check the github

https://github.com/mills5/quakeat-decrypted/issues/2

Now the only issue remaining its to find a way to save the keybindings as every time we exit the game gors to the default arcade machine we have to setup all over again

Posté(e) (modifié)

Not as rare as the Triotech Cyberpod which is an extremely obscure arcade game machine released in 1999 by Triotech. They won't even talk about the machine on their website. Only 1000 are known to be out there and since Triotech did not provide support for their products during that time most are broken. A few survivors exist however, but no one has come forward to owning one.

Changing the name folder and moved it to c: root didnt resolved, for me, the new game issue

i dont have this issue. Controls are correctly saved and i dont have to remap controls each time i launch the game.
maybe the problem is on your side.

I can't run the game. When I start it, the game shows the 3dfx logo, it shows Quake booting and then the game gets out of fullscreen and shows the LBE Systems logo. Black screen, the game won't open. On windows 10 version 1903.

nglide is installed ?

Posté(e) (modifié)

Managed to get it to work with new game and save new keys-this works for me but doesn't mean it will work for everyone, however worth sharing. I have also got it working without installing nglide.

1) Put the Quake Arcade Tournament Edition folder on root of C drive

2)Cleaned out folder so it looked like this

image.png.d0811361e39de96d566858add19807a5.png

3)Within ID1 folder deleted the following;

backup.cfg

config.cfg

config.old.cfg

default.cfg

4)Made target within glquake_decrypted shortcut  "C:\Quake Arcade Tournament Edition\glquake_decrypted.exe" -nogci -width 640 -height 480 -bpp 32

5)Opened game using shortcut

6)Set up Arcade menus and key bindings as wanted-use arrow keys to move around menus and enter to select

7)Exit game

8)Copy newly made config.new.cfg file from within ID1 folder and rename as the 4 above deleted files AND make READ ONLY in properties

9)Reload game and all should be good to go including being able to start a new game rather than using the load game routine.

I tried different resolutions but kept getting errors, and this matches to the arcade resolution

I haven't got the 3dfx logo part showing on mine but I think that might be because not using nglide at this end

@Tiberius Nice ! will give it a try.

Edit:  No luck for me.. i still have the "Trying Primary Port Local" message and the game close when i try to launch new game...:triste:

Dont know what i m doing wrong or what is "bugging" ?

The new config.new.cfg have to be copied in main folder as "config.cfg", "backup.cfg" ,config.old.cfg" "default.cfg", so we have this file copied 4 times right ?

@oroborus77

Sorry hadn't seen your update with issues.

The config file is copied 4 times into the id1 folder, where it should be made as config.new.new when you first open Quake and then set up your keys, and not the main folder.

I am at work at the moment (obvously not busy here!!) but when I get home I will upload my cfgs for you to try, you won't like my key layout but if it gets all the other bits working you can just change those to suit your needs.

Apparently there were more games planned for the Lazer Tron system, such as a Jazz Jackrabbit arcade game. The only other Lazertron game known to be released is actua soccer.

Anyone know how to change it from Free Play to Coin?

Update, deleted the config files and started fresh. I’m able to play in coin mode however It crashes when trying to play a new game and the coin button doesn’t work when trying to load any of the included saves. Anyone that had this issue figure it out?

Well, I have to say I never thought there would be as many people interested in this game as there is. I actually own this game in a original cab. The "patched exe" was more than likely from me years ago as I gave 1 copy of it to someone and it ended up in mame after that.

I have the Full CD with the pre security patch and the original hard Dive with the Security enabled game. If anyone is interested I can upload some photos of my cab, for people to look at. I also build a second PC that runs win98 se and was able to get most of the game to function properly in that. The game IS a bit buggy to be honest, but it is fun as all Heck to play. :)
